The brief: all UK academics have to have their work audited. Each full time person submits 4 items. Calls for exemptions have led to some case studies.

NB: the REF calls them case studies, but they are not actually real people.

• Dr Price developed pre-eclampsia (a complication of pregnancy) and was admitted to hospital on 9 September 2009.

• In March 2011 it became evident that Dr Jenkins was having difficulties returning to her research and in July 2011 she was diagnosed with postnatal depression.

• Professor Allsop and his partner adopted a 3 year old child in 2006.
• In May 2009, Professor Allsop’s partner died following a short illness.

• Professor Obabanjo’s partner was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in December 2010.
• Following the diagnosis his partner’s condition rapidly deteriorated and in October 2011 it was recognised that a 24 hour carer was required.

• Dr Cheng is the primary carer of her child, who was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) in January 2009.

• Dr Tsang was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2008 and was off work receiving medical treatment and recovering from surgery until October 2008.

It goes on. There are no normal pregnancies (of the most normal, breast feeding is treated as if it's an illness) and if you have a mobility impairment the lift to your lab *will* be destroyed by fire.
