I persuaded Edward to go with me to this last night. I'd seen posters and it looked fun: "Aboriginal girl band ends up playing to troops in Vietnam" is more original than anything the previews shown last night offered.

Huge fun, little drops of politics, not very subtle but making the necessary points about racism, a romance plot that had a bit too much of the Magical White Man but which was still lovely because it also had "fat women are sexy too" without making any issue of it. The music was great and two of the voices were gorgeous enough to send shivers down my spine (and it must be tough to say to actresses auditioning for Gayle: "your voice is a bit too good for this part").

Overall I'd say four stars (dropping the fifth for predictability), and a solid two handkerchieves.*

If it's still on when my mother is in London I'll take her to see it.

*A box = Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. I'd gone with a friend, we knew nothing about it. In the first ten mins she handed me her only handkerchief. By the end of the movie my thin cotton skirt was stiff with salt.

I'm glad it was good, I was wanting to take mum to see it at some point but wasn't sure if it'd be a stereotype flop.
